Bonnie Schmelzer, 70, passed away peacefully in her home on Jan. 20, 2017. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at St Ludmila's Catholic Church.
She was born April 25, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Edmund and Frances Houlahan. She was a graduate of LaSalle High School, Class of 1964.
Bonnie worked as a para-educator for 21 years in the Cedar Rapids Community School District.
She is survived by her husband, Butch Schmelzer; two daughters, Vicki Schmelzer of Cedar Rapids and Julie (Eric) Madden of Arizona; a brother, Robert (Judy) Houlahan of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Rose (James) Hammill of Des Moines; a foster son, Sang (Ngoc) Nguyen of Michigan; a daughter-in-law, Kolby Schmelzer of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Brian Schmelzer.
