Sibyl G. Ryan, 96, of Marengo, died Monday, July 13, 2015, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 17, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Marengo, with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, where there will be a Scripture service at 7 p.m.
Sibyl is survived by three sons, Thomas (Theresa) of Marengo, Bart (Alicia) of Iowa City and Don (Kandi) of Marengo; a daughter, Leanne Cronbaugh (Don Max) of Belle Plaine; grandchildren, Jennifer Fencl (Blair) of Cedar Rapids, Matthew Ryan (Julie) of Marengo, Calli Walker (Nick) of St. Charles, Ill., Abby Kasper (Jesse) of Belle Plaine, Ben Cronbaugh (Amanda Folkmann) of Ames, Elisa Ryan of Marengo and Gregory Ryan of Marengo; great-grandchildren, Luke, Grace and Hannah Ryan, Mariah and Kaleb Fencl, Camrynn Walker and Reese Kasper; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Max and Colette Franks. Also surviving is a half brother, Kenneth Arnesen (Christine) of Wheaton, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jim in 2006.
Sibyl Georgeanna Arnesen was born Feb. 14, 1919, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of George Thomas and Anna Simpson Arnesen. She graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1936 and attended the Chicago Business College. She taught for a time at the college and later worked at Continental Bank in Chicago.
Sibyl was united in marriage to James Adrian Ryan on Aug. 26, 1944, in Chicago. While Jim was serving his country, Sibyl worked at the Bank of America in Los Angeles. Upon his return to the states, the couple moved to Marengo where they farmed and raised their family. She was a loving wife and mother, who kept busy with the children's many activities and community involvement. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Marengo, the altar and rosary, the American Legion Auxiliary, PTA and NFO.
When the children were older, Sibyl went to work at the Big G grocery store in Marengo. She enjoyed interacting with the people who came through. Sibyl also enjoyed her involvement with Leanne's School of Dance, especially the recitals. Sibyl and Jim enjoyed traveling and the family visited many sites in the U.S. and Canada. They traveled to Mexico, Guatemala and Hawaii, and their trip to Ireland was her favorite. She loved to spend time with her many friends. Most of all, Sibyl cherished her family and was so proud of their many accomplishments and choices in life.
