Young Sr., Jack I.
Jack I. Young Sr., 90, of Iowa City, died July 25, 2009, at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. A gathering time will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Iowa City Animal Shelter in Jack's name.
He was born in Davenport, Iowa, on May 24, 1919, to Lionel and Johanna (Joens) Young. As a child he lived in Davenport and Tulsa, Okla. On July 21, 1942, he married Miriam J. Stevenson, and entered the 76th Medical Detachment in Vancouver, Wash., later that year. After the war he and Miriam operated Young's Photo and Art Shop, a portrait studio, camera and art supply store in Iowa City from 1947 to 1973. His second passion was remodeling and managing rental properties in the Iowa City area until his semiretirement about 1980.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and only brother, Kenneth of Kansas City, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam; his children, Susan Young, Jack (Pam) Young II, Rebecca (Mike) Buckman and Elizabeth (Charles) Young-Ikechukwu; six grandchildren, Leah (Ron) Calvert, Rachel (Ben) Wehrle, Zachary Young, Nicholas Young, Lorraine Buckman and Christopher Buckman; and two great-grandchildren.
