Wanda L. Becker, 85, of Maquoketa, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at the Hiawatha Care Center. A celebration of Wanda's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be in Smithtown Cemetery, rural Lost Nation.
Wanda Lea Reid was born at home on Feb. 24, 1931, in Jones County, Iowa, to Edwin E. and Frances M. (Post) Reid. She attended country school in Jones County through eighth grade and graduated from Onslow High School in 1948. She then received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1950. She married Arthur Becker Jr. on June 1, 1951, at Onslow Presbyterian Church in Onslow, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Noel, Rick and twin daughters, Lisa and Linda.
Wanda was a farm wife who farmed with her husband in the Oxford Junction area for many years. She managed all of the day-to-day operations of the farm and the family. Prior to becoming a farm wife, she had taught school for six years in Onslow, Monmouth and Lost Nation. In later years, she worked at Sherri's Tax Service.
Wanda was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation. She enjoyed dancing and many others enjoyed her cooking. She was a fun-loving person who had a spunky, natural and easy sense of humor. Spending time and traveling with her family were Wanda's favorite things. She loved her grandpuppy "Sammy" dearly. She had a grace-filled life and always thought of others first.
Those left to honor Wanda's memory include her children, Rick (Anna) Becker of North Barrington, Ill., Lisa (Bruce) Boldt of Fairfax and Linda Becker of Iowa City; a daughter-in-law, Sandy (Mike) Becker Franzen of Monmouth; a sister, Mary (Pete) Doyle of Bella Vista, Ark.; five grandchildren, Nathan (Janna) Becker of Monmouth, Beau Becker of Osaka, Japan, Keely Becker of North Barrington, Jessica Boldt of Chicago and Ben Boldt of Cambridge, Mass.; and one great-grandchild, Max Becker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur (1987); a son, Noel (2004); a brother, Ronald Reid (2010); and a grandson, Nicholas Becker (2016).
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Union Presbyterian Church, Smithtown Cemetery Association or the Alzheimer's Association.
The family would especially like to thank Prairie Hills Assisted Living and the Hiawatha Care Center for the wonderful care Wanda received.
