Hay, Myrtle A.
Myrtle A. Hay, 88, of Morley, died Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at Mechanicsville Nursing Home in Mechanicsville. A celebration of her life will be Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. at Lahey Funeral Home in Olin, with the Rev. Jim Roth officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Chapel Cemetery, Anamosa.
Myrtle Angeline Hunter was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Morley, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Pearl (Clymer) Hunter. She graduated from Morley Consolidated School in 1938. She married Cecil Hay on Aug. 25, 1939, in Waterloo. He died in February 1980.
She worked at the Anamosa Hatchery, was a doughnut maker at Pearson Grocery in Anamosa, and Myrtle and her husband owned a restaurant in Lisbon. She also had worked at High Grade Cheese in Olin, was a cook at Cavey's in Olin, and bookkeeper and office manager at Olin Telephone Co. for 17 years.
She was a member of Morley First United Methodist Church and Morley Alumni Association. She was active with Jones County 4-H and was a 4-H leader with Fairmor Lively Learners for many years. Myrtle helped run the community and 4-H food stand at the fair and was active with many other clubs and she raised and dressed chickens for many years.
She is survived by three children and seven grandchildren, Coleen (Maynard) Van Antwerp of Morley and children, Julie (Mike) O'Connor, Scott Van Antwerp and Deanna (Carey) Glick; Bruce A. (Dorothy Burmeister) Hay of Jonesboro, Ga., and children, Tara (Chad) Dusanek and Joe (Tif) Hay; and Susan (Don) Von Behren of Anamosa and children, Heather (Steve) Ieronimo and Debbie Von Behren; 12 great-grandchildren, one stepgreat-grandchild; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Muriel Duncan of Anamosa.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Arlene; and a great-granddaughter, Jade Ieronimo.
Memorials are preferred.
