Wood, Amos J.
Amos J. Wood, 85, of Marion, passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Marti Montovani officiating. Entombment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites. Friends may call from 2:30 p.m. until service time Saturday at the chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Marion; daughter, Marilyn (Charles) Hawthorn of Bettendorf; son, Dan (Kathy) Wood of Anamosa; grandchildren, Melissa Hawthorn and Cody Wood; stepgrandchild, Ben Minniear; great-grandchild, Maddox Patterson; and sister, Welma Welper of Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Wayne, Vernie and Ivan.
Amos Junior Wood was born May 21, 1924, in Marion, Iowa, the son of Amos D. and Elma (Glick) Wood. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. On Sept. 7, 1947, he married Gladys Irene Dahms in Olin. Amos was a depot agent telegraph operator for the Milwaukee Railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, railroading and square dancing with Gladys for over 37 years.
