Gordon P. Schmidt, 80, of Manchester, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.
He was born Sept. 5, 1935, in Earlville, the son of Paul and Elda (Becker) Schmidt. He was baptized into the church on Oct. 6, 1935, and confirmed his faith in Jesus Christ on April 10, 1949, at First Lutheran Church. Gordon was raised and educated in the area and graduated from West Delaware High School in 1953. Gordon served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.
On Feb. 29, 1964, Gordon was united in marriage to Alice Marie Michels at First Lutheran Church in Manchester. Together they farmed for several years and then moved to Manchester where he worked for Delaware County Secondary Roads. He retired in 1998.
Gordon was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church. Gordon and Alice traveled extensively throughout the United States, making it to all 50 states. They also traveled to Europe.
Survivors include one son, Gary (Andrea) Schmidt of Manchester; two daughters, Paula (Don) Krogmann of Center Point and Laura (Bill) Thomas of Manchester; nine grandchildren, Jacob Thomas, Lucas (Jessica) Thomas, Megan (Peter) von Qualen, Benjamin Krogmann, Jonathan Krogmann, Hannah Schmidt, Grant Schmidt, Mark (Christina) Schmidt and Christina (Heath) Landt; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Marvelyn (Rick) Davis of Florida; and sisters-in-law, Leona Jones of Cedar Rapids, Delores (Ray) Grulkey of Hiawatha, Carol (Don) Eiben of Anamosa and Mary Michels of Central City.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice Schmidt, on Nov. 11, 2012; a son, Duane Schmidt in July 2012; a daughter, Karla Schmidt at birth; two brothers, Eldon and David (Virginia) Schmidt; a grandson, Paul Schmidt; a granddaughter, Olivia Schmidt; his sister-in-law, Judy LeDuc; his brothers-in-law, Eddie Jones and Richard Michels; and two nephews, Michael Schmidt and Doug Grulkey.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at First Lutheran Church in Manchester, by the Rev. Tony D. Ede. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Friends also may call one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment with military rites: 1:30 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
