DES MOINES - The Iowa City West girls' basketball team came into last week's state tournament as the fifth-ranked team in the state with aspirations to win its second state championship in four years.
Those aspiration were not fulfilled.
The Women of Troy fell just short on Friday, losing to top-ranked West Des Moines Valley, 57-41, after an heroic attempt by the seniors to try to push the West into the championship game.
The Women of Troy shot poorly again Friday, as they did Wednesday. The games were complete opposites, however. On Wednesday, the Women of Troy trailed a majority of the game to take the lead late on a 3-pointer by senior Danielle Craig. Friday, however, West had the lead going into halftime.
Both games experienced a plethora of 3s, which were not converted into points a large majority of the time. Seniors Craig, Bella Lozano-Dobbs, Grace Tafolla and Mikaela Morgan all tried to will their team to a win, but the odds were not in their favor.
Valley converted on the majority of its shots in the second half.
The Women of Troy lost all momentum in the second half, even with a miraculous shot by sophomore Maddie Huinker that banked in a few feet beyond the 3-point arc, and 15 points from Craig.
