CEDAR RAPIDS - The 2014 football season has come to a close, but the topic of football always will be pertinent in the Schulte family.
Carrying out the role of quarterback, sophomore Bryce Schulte helped lead the Xavier to the state football playoffs this year. Head coach Duane Schulte had the opportunity to see his son grow as a player and person this season.
'I've coached all three of our boys in football, basketball and baseball,” Coach Schulte said. 'It's a great way for us to spend time together. I've seen all three of them grow immensely - physically, mentally and emotionally.”
Last year, Bryce was pulled from the stands and asked to dress with the varsity. This year, Schulte was the undisputed starting quarterback and earned second-team all-district. With the help of his father at home and on the field - from watching film to strategizing for the next game - the Saints had another good season. Bryce is grateful for his father's help and continues to show how much he cares.
'I'm thankful that my dad took the time for coaching me on and off the field,” Bryce said. 'He helps me on the field by giving me advice on things I need to work on during practice and if I have a question I can always ask him. He would help me with whatever questions that needed to be answered.”
Although a lot of their time is spent around football, the relationship goes beyond the field. They find a way to separate home life and football life by focusing on what they need to do and how to take care of it. With the help of their family, they are thankful they have the support to do what they love.
'As a head football coach for 21 years, I've been fortunate that my family truly loves Xavier football,” Coach Schulte said.
