Doris Jean (Johnson) Smith, 88, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. Visitation for friends and family will be Thursday, May 5, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow at Baker Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with graveside service.
Doris (Dodie) is survived by her sons, Gary of Cedar Rapids, Denny of Cedar Rapids, Randy (Pam) of Bluffton, S.C., and Jeff (John Stepanek) Smith of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Todd Smith of Denver, Colo., Tiffany Smith of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Brad Smith of Gilbert, Ariz., Jamie Smith of Chandler, Ariz., Colby Smith of Philadelphia, Pa., Scott Smith of Leesburg, Va., and Brandon Smith of Gainesville, Va.; great-grandchildren, Allie, Emma, Alex, Samantha, Logan, Rebecca, Aidan, Peyton and Kiley; great-great-grandson, Julian; and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Thomas Smith, who also passed away on May 1, 31 years ago.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elias and Gertrude Johnson; her beloved sister, Edris Hettinger; her brothers, Kenneth, Carter, Marion, Bill and Gordon; brother-in-law, Darold Smith; sister-in-law, Jean Mulvaney; and many special friends.
Doris was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Newhall, Iowa, daughter of Elias and Gertrude Johnson. She spent her early years on the family farm and moved in the late 1930s to Cedar Rapids, where she met the love of her life, David "Dave." They were married Nov. 8, 1944, and celebrated their 40th anniversary in 1985 before Dave's passing.
Doris attended Wilson High School, where she met David. While raising their four boys, she was employed at the Roosevelt Hotel. She later worked at Teleconnect and Cutting Gardens Flower Shop. Doris loved to dress, dance and shop. She enjoyed playing golf with her many golfing friends and especially with Dave in couples tournaments. Doris was an avid flower gardener, enthusiastic bowler and a consummate shopper. Beautiful and stylish, she prided herself on the appearance of her family and home. She was active in the Red Hats and a longtime member of the Elks Club and the VFW. Doris was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 50 years.
