Emde, Helen Mathel
WELLMAN - Helen Mathel Emde, 96, of Wellman, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at the Parkview Home in Wellman following a brief illness. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Pleasant Hill Church in Joetown, with Pastor Marlene Janssen and Chaplain Carroll Yoder officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Joetown. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. The body has been cremated.
Helen M. (Mathel) Emde was born Oct. 1, 1913, in Washington County, the daughter of George and Mary (Shrader) Trieschmann. She was united in marriage to Carl T. Emde on Dec. 25, 1936, at the Franklin Methodist Church in rural Iowa County. She worked as a waitress at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics coffee shop, did cleaning in private homes and worked in housekeeping at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
Helen enjoyed knitting, crocheting, entertaining friends and family, traveling and vegetable and flower gardening.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann (Max) Stransky of Cedar Rapids; and one granddaughter, Angela Stransky of Cedar Rapids.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents; husband, Carl on April 6, 1996; one daughter, Nancy Louise Emde; three brothers, Joseph, Harold and Willard Trieschmann; and one sister, Marjorie Miller.
A memorial fund has been established for Hospice Compassus and the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
