Gary Joseph Bertling, 63, passed away June 21, 2018. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, where the family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Inurnment will be at Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the Gary Bertling memorial fund has been established for his children
at People's Savings Bank, P.O. Box 160, Montezuma, IA 50171.
Gary was born May 8, 1955, in Cascade, Iowa, the son of Alice (Brady) and Edward Bertling. The family moved to Iowa City, where Gary attended St. Patrick's School. He was a 1974 graduate of Regina High School. On Aug. 15, 2005, Gary married Joyce Whitfield.
He was employed at Walmart in Iowa City and at the University of Iowa - Peterson Hall. Gary had a remarkable and exceedingly strong work ethic and always supported his wife and children. He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed time spent fishing, shooting hoops and playing catch with his children. Gary was a dog person and history buff. He adored his dogs, Redbone, Zilla, Sasha and Duelly. Gary enjoyed watching history documentaries and sports. He was a Bulls, Raiders, Cubs and Hawkeye fan.
Gary is survived by his wife, Joyce; and his daughters, Katie Honts-Bertling, Brandi (Manuel) Ordaz, Shayleigh and Kamden Bertling; his sons, Tyler, Christopher, Cordero and Ryan Bertling; grandchildren, Mason Janssen, Emmanuel, Adah and Samuel Ordaz; his sister, Colleen Hamer; and brothers, Dave (Sharleen) Bertling and Roger (Alexa) Bertling; former spouse, Debra Honts; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Tom Hamer.
