Betty Jean Jensen, 89,
of Elgin, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union.
She was born July 25, 1925, on a farm in Marion Township, Clayton County, Iowa, to George and Ida (Dennler) Christen. She attended Cheery Valley Country School until they moved to Elgin. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1945. On Nov. 30, 1947, she married Dale Jensen at the Methodist Church in Elgin. One daughter, Dayra, was born to this union. Betty worked at O'Neill Drug in Elgin for nine years. She then stayed home to help Dale with the Standard Oil Agency until they retired in 1975. Betty was a longtime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
Betty is survived by her son-in-law, Bill Whitacre of Perry; brother, George L. (Janice) Christen of Waterloo; a special grandson (not by blood but by love), Joe Drahozal; sisters-in-law, Arlene McLaren of Independence, Mary Ann Olander of Oelwein, Marilyn Jensen of Marshalltown, Jane Meyer of New Albin, Kay Schwartz of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Icil Jensen of Winthrop; brothers-in-law, Rollis Jensen of Denver, Iowa, Dr. Kenneth (Norma) Jensen of Cedar Rapids, Jim Jensen of Independence and Lee (Phyllis) Jensen of Mitchellville, Md.; special friends, Arden and Marlene Greener and Vernon and Virginia Wedo; and a host of other relatives.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dale; her daughter, Dayra; her parents; and a brother, Reuben.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin with the Rev. Hyeunmee Kang as the officiant. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin.
