Russell, Josephine Catherine Scherrer
Josephine Catherine Scherrer Russell, 93, of Anamosa, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 11, at Anamosa United Methodist Church. The Rev. Laurie Riley will officiate at the service. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. Interment will be at Antioch Cemetery, rural Anamosa.
She is survived by a daughter, JoAnn (Alan) Courtney, Cedar Rapids; a son, Robert (Marcy) Russell, Marion; five grandchildren, Andy, Erin and Alison Courtney, and Benjamin and Daniel Russell; four great-grandchildren, Madisen Williams, Katelyn, Nikolas and Cyrus Courtney; sister-in-law, Gail Russell; and a number of beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Glen A. Russell; brothers, Harold and Edward Scherrer; sisters-in-law, Phoebe Scherrer, Barbara Mizaur and Mary E. Jones; brothers-in-law, John Russell, Robert (Bud) Mizaur and Chuck Jones; son-in-law, Alan Courtney; and great-grandson, Izaac Courtney.
Josephine Scherrer was born April 23, 1917, in Monticello, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Siebels) Scherrer. She graduated from Monticello High School in 1935. Josephine was employed as secretary for Edw. J. Wenner, attorney, in Waterloo. For 11 years she served as Deputy Clerk of the District Court of Jones County; afterward she worked as a secretary at the law office of Rees, Remeley and Heiserman. She later was employed as secretary for Hon. Warren J. Rees, Associate Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, from 1969-1980.
Josephine served many positions for a variety of organizations, including the Anamosa United Methodist Church, Adah-Esther Circle, Rebekah Lodge, Anamosa Bicentennial Committee and Paint ‘n Palette.
Josephine was married to Glen A. Russell for 22 years until his passing in 1973.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
