MARK FREDERICK SPIELMAN
Cedar Rapids
Mark Frederick Spielman, president of Spielman's Event Services, passed away on March 20, 2019, from complications due to cancer. He was 69 years old. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, March 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home.
Mark was born Nov. 4, 1949, to Raymond and Jane (Miller) Spielman. He attended Lincoln Elementary Grade School and Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, and Iowa State University.
Mark started his career at the young age of 13 for Buresh Rental in Cedar Rapids, eventually becoming manager and vice president at Buresh Rental for over 25 years. He started his own Event Services Inc. company in 1990, which eventually became Spielman's Event Services. Spielman's continues to provide quality services for many organizations, companies, political events, weddings, etc., in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and across the country. Mark knew just about everyone in Cedar Rapids through his company and all of his connections. He had long-standing employees who continue to provide excellent customer service, which Mark felt was the most important part of owning a company.
His first marriage was to Tina Novak, and they were married for 21 years. He was introduced to his great love, Jan Rupiper Schaaf Spielman from Iowa City, by his sister, Linda, and her husband, Chuck Marple, and close friends, Don and Jan Pardubsky. They were married on Oct. 6, 2001, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mark and Jan both had common interests, especially their love of dogs, their families and all the good friends they enjoyed hosting and entertaining in their lovely homes, for which they had six homes in 17 years of marriage.
Mark was a kind, sweet and generous person, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Rupiper Spielman; and their sweet Cavalier King Charles dogs, Beavis and Rita.
He also is survived by his sister, Sheila (Chuck) Day of Fort Worth, Texas, and their family, Tammy (Bobby) Randolph and their children, Emily Randolph and Clarissa McNeely (Justin); nephew, Tom Day (Jenny) and their children, Jack and Morgan of Colorado; his niece, Janelle Adams Reeder (Lenny), Marshalltown; great-niece, Rachael, and great-nephew, Zach Adams; and nephew, Neal (Jane) Marple, and their children, Ethan and Emma of Cedar Rapids. In addition, he is survived by his brother-in-law. Tom Rupiper (Ann), and their children, Jean (Jimmy) Marx, and their children, Hailey and Erica.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Jane (Miller) Spielman; infant brother; his sister, Linda Marple; and brother-in-law, Chuck Marple.
We wish to thank the kindness and exceptional care by Dr. Jasmine Nabi and the nurses, staff and volunteers at the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. Mark enjoyed having his chemotherapy every two weeks. We also thank the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House for the great care they provide, although Mark was just there for a very short time. They have a wonderful setting and very caring staff and volunteers. Thank you all. Jan could not have made this change in her life without the ongoing support of outstanding and caring people.
Memorials may be directed to the Mercy Medical Center Foundation for cancer care or the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
Online condolences may be left for the family at www.teahenfuneralhome.com.
