Bernard Leo Devine, beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend, died on Aug. 15, 2013, at the age of 82, after a brief illness.
Bernard was born to William and Amelia Devine of Ryan, Iowa, on July 15, 1931, joining a brother, William, and a sister, Rosemary (married to Bob McAleer of Cedar Rapids.) After completing high school at St. Patrick's in Ryan, Bernard joined the United States Army and served two years in Germany. While on leave in Dublin, he met Mary Patricia Brogan whom he married in 1955, after returning to the family farm. There they raised Deirdre (Mark) Byrne, Kansas City, Sheila Pagett, Denver, Cyprian Devine-Perez, New York, William, Phoenix, and Kieran, Oregon. Bernard and his former wife are the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren.
Bernard was preceded in death by his father and mother, brother (Father William of Eldora), and grandson, Neal Pagett.
Bernard loved baseball, West Delaware wrestling and girls' softball, video poker, a good laugh, his country, his friends, and his family.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to West Delaware Athletic Department, the Ryan Veterans' Memorial Fund, or St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Ryan.
Bernard's family thanks the staffs of the Good Neighbor Home, Above and Beyond Hospice and Homecare, Regional Medical Center, Dr. Boom, the VA Clinic of Coralville, Manchester Dental, St. Luke's Hospital, and UnityPoint Cardiologists for kindness and superb care.
Bernard will be cremated and the family will greet friends and family from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the St. Patrick's gym in Ryan. There will be a prayer service at 2 p.m.
