Kay Jo Ann (Walters) Ries, 77, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her children.
She was born Dec. 10, 1936, in rural Colesburg, to Ted and Bernice (Amsden) Walters. Kay received her education from Colesburg Community School, where she graduated with the class of 1954. Three years later on June 25, 1957, Kay married James Ries at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Together they raised their children while Kay worked for Monona Wire. After she retired from there, Kay also worked several years in the deli at Benders Foods.
Kay enjoyed traveling, baking for others, Bingo, lunch with "The Girls," Sunday afternoon rides and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grand-children. She also was an avid Cubs fan.
Kay is survived by her five children, Theresa (David) Palas of Volga, Steven Ries of Alexander, Ill., Pat Ries of Volga, Susan (Tom) Fassbinder of Guttenberg and Brenda (Bill) Hartmann of Wonder Lake, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, Brigette, Zach, Abbi, Andy, Mat, Christopher, Taylor, Katie, Brianna, Bryce, Blake and Benjamin; six great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; siblings, June (Lee) Knutson of Marshalltown, Pat (Larry) McNeal of Mesa, Ariz., and Janet Short of Cedar Rapids; and several other relatives and friends.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Cynthia; son, Michael; and brother, Dwight Walters.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 207 S. First St., Guttenberg. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.
