Arlene Schreiber, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center of recently diagnosed cancer. Memorial services will be noon Sunday, Feb. 7, at Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, with Pastor Dan Clark-Bridges presiding. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday. An informal gathering with refreshments will be held after the service at the church. Private family inurnment will be at Czech National Cemetery. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family.

Arlene was born June 2, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, the only child of W.L. and Hilda (Bridges) Dvorak. A lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, she attended Wilson High School and married Chuck Schreiber on Sept. 12, 1950. He preceded her in death in 2007.

Arlene's family was her biggest source of pride and joy. She loved sharing their news or bragging about their latest accomplishments. She was known to most (grandchildren and non-family alike) as Meme. Surviving to continue her memory are daughter, Sandi Swanson (Dave); daughter, Jenni Henne (Jamey); grandchildren, Tiffany Jergenson (Brian), Caden Swanson, Madisyn Henne and Alex Henne; and great-grandchildren, Gwenyth and Camden Jergenson.

Strong in her faith, Arlene was a member of Hope Lutheran Church for over 50 years. She contributed to her church in multiple ways, including weekly offering reconciling and was a major participant on the Building Committee with her husband, Chuck, when the current sanctuary was built.

Arlene and Chuck were a familiar sight at the Tait Cummins softball diamonds on C Street for many decades. Together they organized leagues, tournaments, scorekeepers and teams through the CRASA from 1978.

Arlene was a gifted writer, and many came to look forward to her poems that she easily created for each family event or holiday. She loved to bake and always had a batch of cookies ready to share with any visitor or family member stopping by. Arlene also was known for her coffee cake braids which she distributed each Christmas season. She was a frequent customer at the Wilson Avenue Hy-Vee – our family motto became "If you can't find Meme at home, check at Hy-Vee."

Arlene kept busy watching Hawkeye men's basketball, doing crosswords, balancing her checkbook (every time, to the penny!) and finding the "next thing" to worry about. We will miss her generosity, unconditional love and example of immeasurable faith in God.
