Bette A. Thompson, 75, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Monday, Aug.
11, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City. Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez will officiate. The family will greet friends beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Inurnment of cremains will be at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed
to The American Heart
Association.
Bette was born May 15, 1939, in Keota, Iowa, the daughter of Howard and Ann (Supalla) Hess. Raised in Washington, Iowa, she graduated from high school in Washington and later attended Iowa City Commercial College. She met her
future husband, Mark Thompson, on a blind date while attending school in Iowa City. A resident of
Iowa City since 1957, Bette and Mark were married in Washington on Aug. 16, 1958. She worked for the University of Iowa as the director of the Old Capitol Museum for 34 years, retiring in 1995.
Bette was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Iowa City. She enjoyed reading and playing bridge, playing many hands with different clubs over the years. Bette and Mark enjoyed traveling, especially their many trips to Lake Tahoe.
She is survived by her husband, Mark; her children, Sandy Hoefer (Nick) of Iowa City and Steve Thompson (Linda) of Signal Hill, Calif.; sisters, Doris Sheetz (Jim) of Bentonville, Ark., and Connie Boshart (Mike) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Zachary Thompson, Travis Homewood (Estrella), Mark Homewood, Alexa Homewood, Rebecca Hoefer and Elizabeth Hoefer; and great-grandchildren, Ana, Madeline and Victoria.
Her parents died before her.
