Dorothy Nelson, 91, of Marion, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at UnityPoint Hospice unit in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, conducted by Vicki Standley. The family will greet friends from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home and 30 minutes before the service on Thursday. Graveside services: 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Otho Cemetery, rural Otho, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughter, Carol (Roger) Harms of Titonka; son, Kim (Deb) Nelson of Marion; and grandsons, Cory (Erica) of Clear Lake and Preston of Nashua. Her two sisters, Gladys Laird and Sula Jordison still reside in Fort Dodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jerry Laird and Roland Laird; and one sister, Mary Jane Reed.
Dorothy was born April 23, 1923, in Otho, Iowa, to Emerson and Mary Laird. She was united in marriage to William Nelson on July 6, 1947, in Otho. She was educated at Morningside College and Mount Mercy College. Her teaching career included schools in Otho, Ogden, Harcourt, St. Joseph's (Marion) and Springville. She retired in 1986 after 32 years of instruction.
Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion and Wesleyan Circle. Previously she belonged to the National Education Association and the Springville Education Association.
Memorials may be directed to UnityPoint Hospice, Cedar Rapids, in Dorothy's memory.
The family is most grateful to Dr. Melanie Stahlberg, the staff of Summit Pointe, UnityPoint Hospice and the loving care of her husband, Bill.
