Lee Emanuel Nelson, 80, formerly of Atkins, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, at Woodridge Supportive Living in Geneseo, Ill., following an extended illness. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with the Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz officiating. Friends may register before the memorial service at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Raetz Cemetery near Atkins. Following interment, a Celebration of Life will be held at Atkins Park Pavilion. All wishing to join are welcome. Lee was born Nov. 22, 1933, in Atkins, to Stanley and Echo (Kolsto) Nelson. Lee graduated from Atkins High School in 1951. During the Korean War he served his nation in the U.S. Army, based in San Antonio. Before his retirement, he was employed as a Barron Motor's machinist.
Lee's interests were his family, Atkins family, friends, sailplanes and dirt track/stock car racing. His dedication and commitment as a provider was unparalleled.
Lee is survived by his daughters, Michelle Nelson and Diane (Chris) Biellier; grandchildren, Alexandria and Edward Shimkat, Caleb Biellier, Quentin Topping and Carter Biellier; soon-to-be arriving great-grandchild; sister, Lois Longfield; and canine companion, Sadie.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David and Gordon; and nephew, Jimmy.
A memorial fund has been established for Atkins First Responders.
