Randy L. Nelson, 65, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, surrounded by his family at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Per Randy's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at Hope Lutheran Church, 2736 Bowling St. SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, followed by a time for sharing memories. Private burial will be at Linwood Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements made by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Randy was born Sept. 8, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Hardy and Annabelle "Ann" (Moritz) Nelson. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. Randy worked as the warehouse manager at Terry-Durin Co. during his 47-year career. He loved Harleys and his old Indian motorcycle. Randy also loved the outdoors. He was very artistic and a skilled wood carver. Randy was a jokester with a soft heart. He always was willing to help others and enjoyed putting a smile on everyone's face.
Survivors include his siblings, Sheila (John) Gillick of Faribault, Minn., Diana Nelson Thomsen of Cedar Rapids, Richard (Betty) Nelson of Cedar Rapids, Robert (Allison) Nelson of Mankato, Minn., and Russell Nelson of Cedar Rapids; several nieces and nephews; his special family at Terry-Durin Co.; and his canine companion, Scout.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hardy and Ann Nelson; and grandparents, William and Theresa Moritz.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the ICU physicians and staff at Mercy Medical Center.
