COMMUNITY TIP: Running with a purpose

Have you ever stopped for a moment to think about why you run?
Is it:
* Just for fun?
* A social activity?
* To see how fast you can go?
* A form of therapy?
* A way to burn calories?
* Something else...
Maybe your reason is a combination of the items above. Whatever your why, I encourage you to run with a purpose in mind.
For example, if your why is to prepare for a big race, focus on the intent of the run. Maybe you're facing a really hard workout, maybe it's a recovery run, or maybe it's your long run when you need to focus on gutting it out and putting in the miles. We all have different reasons for heading outside or to the treadmill, but if you are able to make each run serve a purpose, this will help you focus on your ultimate goal.
If your why is more therapeutic in nature - if running makes you feel better or offers a form of relaxation/soul-searching, allow your body to relax while you're out hitting the pavement. Focus on letting all of your concerns go by the way side and enjoy the fresh air.
Maybe you're why is to burn calories so you can fit into that favorite pair of jeans currently in the back of the closet...or so you can enjoy a scoop of ice cream with your brownie. Use that reason as extra motivation to go the extra mile or finish a little harder than last time.
In my opinion, all of these are very good whys.
Through running with a purpose, we repeatedly remind ourselves why we're lacing up our shoes each day, why we enjoy the activity so much, and what we're accomplishing in the process. If each run has a purpose, I find it's much more likely that I'll make the time in my day to make it happen. If it's a hard workout - I prepare mentally for the task at hand and make it a priority to allow ample time to complete the task. If it's a long run, I pay special attention to my diet and fluid intake so that I'm ready. If it's a recovery run, I focus on running relaxed, having fun, and allowing my body the opportunity to take it easy.
Regardless of the why for the day, as long as I have a plan before I set out (and I stick to it...) I'm able to feel as if I accomplished something in the process. I'll admit - I enjoy that feeling of accomplishment, and have been known to treat myself upon "mission completion." Somehow a trip to Dairy Queen or an extra dessert seems to make all the hard work worthwhile. Life's short, right? Remember to have fun along the way!
