Our community needs the library

To the editor:
While many people enjoy visiting and using the library, the clients of Young Parents Network (YPN) need the library. They need it because they want a better life for themselves and their children. YPN was founded in 1985 to support young families who need help. As YPN celebrates 30 years of serving families in East Central Iowa, we also celebrate the community partners who help our mission. The Cedar Rapids Public Library is one of those valued partners.
Although approximately 75 percent of YPN parents are employed, the wages they earn often meet only the basic needs of their family. These young parents depend on the library for resources they might not otherwise have access to, including a host of free or low-cost educational activities to do with their children. Special story times offered to them include a meal and a workshop where story sharing is modeled for them and books go home with the children. Other activities help them learn various ways to prepare their children for school success. Child development screenings are available free of charge. The library also serves as a lifeline for those without computers and Internet access, allowing them to find and apply for jobs and resources and stay in touch with family.
Cedar Rapids is fortunate to have such a resource. I encourage you to vote yes for the library on Tuesday. The hardworking families and children in our community deserve it.
