IOWA CITY – Iowa City Regina is again on the doorstep of the 2A girls' basketball state tournament. But if the Regals are going back to Des Moines for a second straight year, they'll have to do what no other team has accomplished this season.
Beat Cascade.Regina seniors Jenna Lehman and Katie Wick each scored 19 points, and the Regals outrebounded Highland by 23 to vanquish the Huskies, 71-37, in a Class 2A regional semifinal last night at Regina.
"We came out of the gates and played as hard as we have all year,' Regina Coach Clark Anderson said. "Very excited about the way our team played together."
Regina (18-5), which eliminated Highland (15-9) in the regional semis for the second straight year, scored the first 15 points of the game. They later added an 11-1 surge to lead 32-16 at halftime. The final score represented the largest margin of the game.
Wick and Kennedy Brown each pulled down 12 of Regina's 47 rebounds, which offset the Regals' 25 turnovers.
"To get rebounds like that, it really drives the offense," Lehman said.
Cheyann Adamson and Kelsey Hora each had 11 points for Highland.
Regina's win sets up a 2A regional final Monday at Tipton versus second-ranked Cascade (24-0). The Regals hope to answer the 26-point pasting Cascade laid on then-No. 10 Regina on Feb. 4. The loss was the start of a three-game slide for the Regals to close the regular season.
"They're a small, fast team,' Lehman said. "Their shots were really on when we played them, and we hope to come out better and stronger than we did the time we played them. We're really excited to play them."?
