Geraldine Allen Thomas, 89, of Tama, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, was called home by her heavenly father on Feb. 18, 2016.
Geraldine was born on a farm eight miles east of Anamosa on May 19, 1926, as was her twin sister, Arlene, to Cora Butterfield Allen and Sumner Sherman Allen. She attended school in Cedar Rapids after 12 years of age and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1944.
Gerry (as she was known) married Robert O. Thomas on Oct. 9, 1944, in Tacoma, Wash., as he was in the service at Fort Lewis there. To this union four children were born: Larry, Steve, Kathy and Becky. They were fortunate to have 62 years of marriage together.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and active in Women's Lydia Circle at Tama. She was a member of the Tama P.E.O. Chapters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Kathy; infant granddaughter, Stephanie; seven sisters, Maxine Shield, Marjorie Ward, Norma Mitchell, Betty Blake, Beatrice Dudek, twin Arlene Reed and Shirley Bransford; and two brothers, Paul Allen and Maynard Allen.
Surviving her are three children, Larry (Deb) Thomas of Tama, Steve (Barb) Thomas of McKinney, Texas, and Becky (Stan) Zeutenhorst of Brooklyn, Iowa; six grandchildren, Paige (Mark) Herbsleb of Grimes, Scott (Lori Jo) Thomas of Greys Lake, Ill., Kevin (Shayla) Thomas of Tama, Todd (Jamille) Thomas of Prosper, Texas, Zachary (Shannon) Zeutenhorst of Des Moines and Zoshua (Maria) Zeutenhorst of Cedar Rapids; and 14 great-grandchildren, Logan Hersleb, Luke Herbsleb, Mallory Herbsleb, Russell Thomas, Callen Thomas, Brooke Thomas, Braydon Zeutenhorst, Brody Zeutenhorst, Kacie Zeutenhorst, Anya Zeutenhorst, Mila May Zeutenhorst, Jace Thomas, Tiffany Thomas and Tristan Thomas.
A visitation is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, 209 E. Seventh St., Tama. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 700 Harmon St., Tama.
