Quigley, Helen Marie
Helen Marie Quigley, 85, of Iowa City, died peacefully Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Crestview Care Center in West Branch. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Coralville, with Father Walter Helms officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be held at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Foundation or the Salvation Army.
Helen was born June 16, 1926, in St. Anthony, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary Roche Curley. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Marshalltown. On June 14, 1947, Helen married Leeman “Lee” Quigley in Marshalltown. Lee died on Oct. 6, 2005.
Helen and Lee were longtime residents of Marshalltown, moving to Iowa City in 1966, where they made their home.
Helen was employed for over 22 years with Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric, retiring in 1992.
She was a member of St. Thomas More Church and volunteered at Mercy Hospital, where she was a past president of the Mercy Hospital Guild and was instrumental in the development of Mercy's guest lodging. Helen also volunteered at the Salvation Army. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards with her grandchildren and was an avid Hawkeye fan. Helen was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Champion and the staff at Mercy Hospital and Crestview Care Center for their wonderful care.
Helen is survived by her three children, D.J. Quigley, Linda (Tim) Sondgeroth and Steve (Pam) Quigley, all of Iowa City; seven grandchildren, Travis (Tina) Sondgeroth, Tracy Sondgeroth (Judy Cross), Stacy (Joe) Fultz, Lindsay, Heather, Ryan and Brooke Quigley; four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Kaitlyn, Emma and Drew; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lee; and siblings, Bill Curley, Ada Elliott, Mary Good, Winnie Barker, Jo Lovig, Janie Kriegel and Frances “Sis” Jamell.
