Helen Marie Wroblewski was born March 29, 1919, at Monticello, Iowa. She was the daughter of Anton and Florence (nee Parrott) Wroblewski. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1937. Helen continued her education at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, where she received her nursing degree in 1941. She worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City until enlisting in the United States Army Nurse Corps in 1943.
During World War II First Lieutenant Helen Weis met her husband, Capt. Lester Weis, while both were stationed at Camp Crowder, Mo. They were married on April 10, 1943. Helen was later stationed at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas and Lester remained at Camp Crowder before going to Japan in 1945.
Following their discharge from the military the couple settled in Union, N.J., and started their family. They later moved to Nashville, Tenn., where Lester was transferred by his employer, Western Electric Co. After her two children started high school Helen returned to nursing and was the head nurse of a medical surgical unit at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. She retired from nursing in 1977 to travel with her husband and daughter through Europe.
Helen moved to Wilmington, N.C., in 1978 with Les and lived there until 1998, when they moved to New Hope, Pa., to live with their daughter.
