Stephan, Dr. Sheryl Jo
Dr. Sheryl Jo Stephan, 78, of Richmond, Ky., passed away Friday, April 26, 2013, at Kenwood Health and Rehab, Richmond, Ky. Funeral memorial services: 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 13, at Queen of All Saints Chapel, All Saints Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. John R. Flaherty. Visitation: one hour before funeral time at All Saints Church, 720 29th St. SE. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Dr. Stephan was born Aug. 6, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was the daughter of Joseph and Mildred Stephan, both of whom preceded her in death. Sheryl graduated from Roosevelt High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1952. She received her undergraduate degree at MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill.; her master's degree from the University of Iowa, and her doctorate from Indiana University. She taught in L'Anse, Mich., and Cleveland Heights, Ohio, before going to Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, Ky. Sheryl taught for 30 years in the Parks and Recreation Department.
Sheryl enjoyed the outdoors and hiking. She was director of Camp Hitaga in Iowa for several summers. She was active in the Helping Hands Cancer Support Group in Richmond, Ky.
Survivors include a brother, R.J. (Pat) Stephan of Cedar Rapids; and four nephews and nieces, Craig (Sheila) Stephan of Cedar Rapids, Connie (Dave) Kielty of Sun Prairie, Wis., Brian (Carrie) Stephan of Iowa City and Laurie (Mike) Collins of Seneca, S.C.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Morning Point Assisted Living, Baptist Health, Kenwood Heath and Rehab, and Hospice Compassionate Care Center, all of Richmond, Ky., for the care given to Sheryl during these last years. A special thank you to her doctors, nurses, caregivers, special friends, and colleagues.
Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
