Dr. Stevan S. Mowrey, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital. Services at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Pastor Herb Isenberg will officiate. Burial with military rites at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Louise; and three daughters, Linda Schuyler (Mike) of Tampa, Fla., Karen Koch (Jim) and Jill Anderson (Scott), both of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Kimberly Tucker (Shane) and Jacob Schuyler, Dillon and Brandon Koch and Macy and Jenna Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Stevan was born on Dec. 23, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, the only child of Harold and Ethel Scott Mowrey. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1951. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1957 where he belonged to the Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity. He married Louise E. Wiley on June 29, 1957.
He entered the Air Force where he was stationed in Laredo, Texas, for two years, and then Loan Air Force Base in France for four years. Steve returned to Cedar Rapids to start his own dental practice in 1962. Meanwhile, he served in the Air Force Reserve and later the Army Reserve and National Guard. He was discharged as a lieutenant colonel having served 40 years.
Steve was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon. He was also a member of many dental associations, Tuesday Noon Optimists and the Elks club.
His many hobbies included astronomy, hunting, golfing, tomato gardening and reading World War II books. Steve and Louise traveled extensively throughout the world. Their favorite trips included Europe, China, Australia and many cruises.
Memorial donations may be given to the American Cancer Society or to First Presbyterian Church.
