Richard "Dick" D. Boies, 61, of Adel, formerly of Keystone, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014, in his home. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at St. John Catholic Church, Adel. Burial: Van Meter Cemetery, following the service. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday, April 4, at McCalley Funeral Home, Adel, where family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Dusty Morrison; his mother, Nancy Boies; his son, Matt Boies; stepdaughters, Lisa Umbaugh and Trista Hills; brothers, Jim Boies and Bill Boies; and sisters,
Terri Buelow, Barb DeMeulenaere and Cathy Lentz.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Boies; and stepgrandson, Devin Umbaugh.
Dick was born Aug. 27, 1952, in Belle Plaine, Iowa. He graduated from Benton Community High School in Van Horne in 1970. Dick earned his degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa and began teaching in the Van Meter Schools in 1974 and become athletics director for 28 years, until his retirement in 2007. He was a basketball referee for many years and was inducted into the Referee Hall of Fame by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association in 2004.
