Stanley L. "Stan" Kacena, 82, lifetime resident of Iowa City, died Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Lantern Park Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 19, at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military honors will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. A time for visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Stanley Lorence Kacena was born Aug. 13, 1932, in Iowa City, to John and Alene F. (Lorence) Kacena. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954. On Sept. 20, 1958, Stan was united in marriage to Carole Buckman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Stan worked for several years at Nesper Signs in Cedar Rapids before purchasing his own company, Kacena Signs, in 1976. He retired from the sign company in 2000 and worked as a delivery driver for Barron's in Iowa City.
Stan was a bowler in the Iowa City area for many years which lead to his wife and children also being avid bowlers. He also enjoyed scratching tickets and playing the slots.
His family includes his wife, Carole; their children, Larry (Daylene Cox) of North Liberty, Gary (Pam) of Marion, Thomas (Ellen Ramsey-Kacena) of Swisher, Richard (Kimberly) of Swisher and Casey of Iowa City; grandchildren, Shannon Rutherford (Brian), Justin (fiancee, Terri), Samantha, Amanda, Mickey, Joshua, Rebecca, Megan, Dylan, Kyle and Elizabeth Kacena; brother, Robert Kacena (Betty) of Iowa City; sister, Karen Diltz of Runnels; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Kacena of Burlington.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James; and brother-in-law, Tom Diltz.
Donations in Stan's memory may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Iowa City VAMC.
