Cathleen Lucille Shaffer, 87, of Central City, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, at Keystone Cedars in Cedar Rapids, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Murdoch Funeral & Cremation Service in Central City. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the funeral home in Central City. Burial: Mount Clark Cemetery in Central City.
Survivors include her sons, Douglas (Janell) Shaffer of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Patty) Shaffer of Alburnett and David (Deanna) Shaffer of Coggon; her grandchildren, Michelle, Staci, Jessica, Angie, Emily, Dexter and Dylan; five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Dwayne (Isla) Powell of Central City.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, James L. and Mary Powell, Albert L. Sr. and Anna Fuessley; her parents; and her husband, Richard Shaffer.
Cathleen was born March 26, 1928, in rural Linn County to Harlin and Irene (Fuessley) Powell. She married her husband, Richard Shaffer, on Dec. 28, 1947, in Walker, Iowa. She raised three boys and worked with Richard on their farm. After leaving the farm, she attended South Florida School of Floral Design and started her own flower business as Cathleen's Flowers in Central City. Cathleen continued this for the rest of her life.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Central City. Cathleen enjoyed singing at weddings and funerals, square dancing, traveling, gardening, flowers and making handbags.
She always had a beautiful backyard full of flowers in her gardens. Cathleen loved spending time with her family and friends.
