Ivan Wayne Ulin passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at the Iowa City VA Health Care System following a short illness at age 89.
Ivan was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Wellman, Iowa, the son of Otis and Hazel (Matthess) Ulin. Ivan attended Daytonville School and Wellman High School before enlisting in the Navy. He served on the USS Tuscon covering the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946. On May 16, 1947, he was united in marriage to Frances Polton in Kinross. He ran the Sinclair Station in Wellman for 21 years, as well as being a longtime lover of antiques. In addition to work and family, Ivan spent many happy hours on nearby rivers fishing.
Ivan is survived by two sons, Douglas (Deborah) Ulin of Wellman and Thomas (Carmela) Ulin of Wellman; three daughters, Cynthia Prohosky of Phoenix, Mary Ulin of Washington and Heather (Kenny) Fleming of Marengo; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances, in 2004; and two brothers, Cedric and Ronnie Ulin.
Celebration of Life services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Burial will be in Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, March 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Wellman.
A memorial fund has been established for the Iowa City VA Health Care System.
