James Arthur Hutton, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Celebration of Life services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, where full military rites will be conducted following the service. Private family inurnment will be Sunday, July 10, in Wyoming Cemetery. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is assisting with Jim's arrangements.
Jim was born at home on Jan. 28, 1934,
on a farm near Monticello. The son of Lloyd and Burnetta (Jackson) Hutton, Jim graduated from Jesup Consolidated High School, Class of 1951, where he played football and was active in Future Farmers of America. Upon graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean conflict. Jim was united in marriage to Irene Stancel on Dec. 7, 1957, at Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Jim and Irene owned and operated Jim's Appliance Sales and Service for over 40 years.
Jim had a strong commitment to civic engagement which was reflected in his 33 years of service as a Linn County Special Deputy, president and founder of the Cedar Rapids Citizen Radio Club, and deacon of Hus Memorial Church.
In addition, Jim was active in Fraternal Order of Eagles, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Gold Wing Motorcycle Club, Scarlet Angels Color Guard and Jefferson High School Booster Club. He also was a loyal blood donor. He enjoyed photography, reading, camping and motorcycling.
Jim is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Deb Hutton of Cedar Rapids, Dennis Hutton (Michael Ziegenhorn) of Iowa City, Dulce Powell of Clarksville, Tenn., and Dayna Ballantyne of Iowa City; and six grandchildren, Christian Powell, Derrik Powell, Jenna Powell, Aubrey Ballantyne, Amara Ballantyne and Ian Ballantyne.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his aunts, Sybil Hartman and Evalyn Sheldon.
The family will be eternally grateful for the grace and care provided by the nurses and staff at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy Fund.
