Powell, Sandy
Sandy Powell, 73, of rural North Liberty, died at her home Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013. Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at First United Methodist Church in North Liberty. Visitation will be one hour before the services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her memory to First United Methodist Church of North Liberty.
Sandra Rae Powell was born April 13, 1940, in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Geraldine (Graves) Powell. Following graduation from high school in Anamosa, Sandra received her BS and RN degrees from Coe College. She later attended Rutgers University and Columbia University, receiving her master's degree and returned to Iowa City to the University of Iowa for her Ph.D. in higher education. She was a professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa, retiring over ten years ago.
During her academic career she was a member of a number of professional organizations and associations. Upon retirement she has been active in her church, co- founder of the Stephens Ministry within the church, exploring, growing, and sharing in her spirituality each day. She has always has a special love for nature, and all animals, especially her dogs over the years.
Her family includes Brenda Pastin, her life mate for over 33 years; a brother, Thomas B. Powell III and his wife, Barb, of Nelysford, Va.; and her sister, Linda Lilly and her husband, Bill, of Townsend, Md.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Sandra's family and her services.
