Wyant, N. Dean
N. Dean Wyant, 88, of Marengo, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at Marengo Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, with the Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Burial will be in Marengo Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Marengo American Legion Post 76. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
Memorials may be contributed to First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, or the American Heart Association.
Dean is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, William D. Wyant and wife Rona of Marengo; three daughters, Suzanne Rose and husband Dave of Clinton, Sally Buscemi and husband Carl of Houston, Texas, and Sara R. Wyant Johnson and husband Allan of St. Charles, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Kara Luett (Eric) of Long Grove, Kirstin Hagerty (Justin) of Cedar Rapids, Levi Wyant of Marengo, Cassie Bott (Zach) of Williamsburg, Bret Wyant (Jamie) of Omaha, Neb., Robin Boyd and Travis Boyd of Houston, Jason Lutz and Jordan Lutz of St. Charles, Ill., and Lance Rose of Eagle, Colo.; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Barbara Sandersfeld of Marengo.
His parents, and a sister, Dorothy Enochson, preceded him in death.
Nelson Dean Wyant was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Hilton Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Nelson Olin Wyant and Esther Howard Wyant. He received his elementary education at Pico-Revera, Calif. He graduated from Conroy High School, Conroy, Iowa, in 1939. Dean served in the U.S. Army for three years, stationed in California, Virginia and Korea. He was present during the invasion at Okinawa. Dean married Betty R. Simmons on March 12, 1947, at the Presbyterian Chapel in Marengo. He owned and operated his family farm in Iowa County for over 60 years. This farm attained the Century Farm Award in 2002.
Dean was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marengo and a 63-year member of Marengo American Legion Post 76. He enjoyed traveling (all states and Europe), boating, reading and researching his family history. He served as a 4-H leader and a church elder.
