Waukon gains share of 2A top spot

The debate for No. 1 in Class 2A football has resulted in a split decision.Waukon accompanies Carroll Kuemper on the top 2A rung in The Gazette's football poll, released today.
The Indians (1-0) opened their season with a 56-0 rout of Oelwein last week and earned 38 points and two first-place votes from the four-person panel. Kuemper was a 7-6 winner over Carroll and also garnered 38 points and a pair of No. 1 votes.
The other five No. 1 teams remain the same.Cedar Rapids Xavier (4A), Sioux City Heelan (3A), Iowa City Regina (1A), BGM (Class A) and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (8-Man) lead their respective classes.
Xavier, Regina and Exira-EHK are unanimous picks.The Saints (1-0) handled Dubuque Hempstead, 35-7, Friday, jumping to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruising from there. Heelan (1-0) outlasted 4A rival Sioux City East, 27-22.
Regina (1-0) claimed its 43rd consecutive victory, 42-14, over West Liberty. BGM (1-0) scored 49 first-quarter points in a 77-22 pasting of East Marshall, and Exira-EHK (1-0) handled Boyer Valley, 40-8.
West Des Moines Dowling was second in all four 4A ballots, and remains at No. 2. Iowa City West and Urbandale share the third spot. Cedar Rapids Prairie joins the rankings at No. 10.
The Hawks opened with a 24-7 victory over Cedar Rapids Jefferson.Grinnell grabbed a first-place vote in 3A after a hard-fought 27-20 win over Williamsburg, and stands No. 2 behind Heelan. Spencer is third, defending state champion Decorah is fourth.
Dyersville Beckman remains third in 2A after handling county rival Western Dubuque, 41-19. The Blazers face another 3A foe -- West Delaware -- this week.
Dike-New Hartford edged Council Bluffs St. Albert for the No. 2 spot in 1A. South Winneshiek is fourth.
Defending Class A champion Wapsie Valley is third behind BGM and West Lyon. Newell-Fonda and Don Bosco share the No. 2 slot in Eight-Man.
