CLASS 2A

Waukon (12-1) vs. Carroll Kuemper (13-0)

Notable:Waukon comes in ranked fourth, Kuemper is No. 1. Neither team has played in a championship game, though Kuemper was in the semifinals last season. The Knights beat Sioux Center in this year's semis, 28-6. Meanwhile, Waukon topped unbeaten Albia, 27-21. Statistically, these teams are equals. Waukon averages 41.5 points per game and gives us 7.9, Kuemper averages 43.6 points and gives up 6.5. Kuemper quarterback Cole Neary has completed 67 percent of his passes this season for 2,824 yards and 35 touchdowns. He has 6,222 career passing yards, which is 13 all-time in state history. Waukon's Marcus Weymiller has rushed for 1,553 yards and 25 touchdowns. He averages 11 yards a carry. Quarterback Parker Hesse has thrown for 1,216 yards and 13 TDs, completing 65.5 percent of his passes. Oregon State recruit Glyeb Ewing has a team-leading 102 tackles, 16 for loss.

CLASS 4A

Cedar Rapids Xavier (12-1) vs. West Des Moines Dowling (13-0)

Notable:Dowling comes in ranked No. 1, Xavier is No. 3. Dowling has won three prior state championships - in 2000, 2001 and 2010 - and finished runner-up seven times. Xavier won the 2006 4A championship and was runner-up last season. Xavier has a state-best defensive average of 5.23 points per game. The Saints have posted eight shutouts, with 29 of their 68 points allowed coming in their lone loss (26-10 to Cedar Rapids Washington). They have allowed seven points in the postseason, that coming in a 31-7 semifinal win over Bettendorf. Dowling averages 40.2 points per game and is led by quarterback Ryan Boyle, who has thrown for 1,546 yards and rushed for 1,254. He has 39 total touchdowns. Running back Brendan Miller paces Xavier with 1,428 rushing yards and 17 TDs. Dowling beat West Des Moines Valley in the semifinals, 17-3. Both teams have excellent kickers in Ryan Persick (Xavier) and Nick McLellan.
