Midseason coaching change at Waukon

Dec. 30, 2016 7:28 pm
WAUKON — Andy Sires has submitted a midseason resignation as girls' basketball coach at Waukon High School.
Dave Schoeberlein will finish the season as interim coach.
Sires succeeded Gene Klinge after the state's all-time winningest coach was not retained following the 2013-14 season. Sires compiled an 18-33 record in 2 1/2 seasons, including 2-6 this year.
According to Dave Herold, superinendent of schools for the Allamakee Community School District, Sires did not resign as a teacher.
In a statement obtained by The Waukon Standard, Sires said, 'Since being offered this position three years ago, I've tried to offer the girls a good basketball experience. I guess a 2-6 start this year didn't meet expectations.
'I definitely didn't want to step aside mid-year, but when I was approached by the administration I wasn't left with much for options. Plus, it really made me think about the impact coaching has had on my family. I'm at peace with the change and I wish for nothing but the best for Indian girls basketball.'
