CEDAR RAPIDS – New Year's Eve is a time for celebration, and of course, those half-hearted resolutions that are seldom followed through.
But Sheldon and Katrina Allen made promises this Dec. 31 with full hearts that were affirmed by an exchange of vows and golden rings.
“I do,” said Katrina Allen, formerly Katrina Benning, 27, of Hiawatha. “That wasn't so hard.”
The two were married at the Cedar Rapids Wedding Chapel at 1513 First Ave. E early Thursday night. The small, intimate gathering of 20 of their closest friends and family, lacked the stiff formalities and long, drawn out ceremonies, just as the couple had wanted.
“We didn't want some long, drawn out process,” said Sheldon Allen, 24. “We wanted people to have fun, that's what marriage is all about.”
The two picked New Year's Eve for many reasons:
“We wanted to go into the New Year together,” said Katrina. “It means a lot to start the rest of our lives together.”
Her husband Sheldon was a little more practical.
“This way I won't forget our anniversary,” said Sheldon. “It's impossible.”
The Rev. William Harnish said that New Year's Eve is becoming more and more popular with would-be bride and grooms, and that he's seen a steady flow of ceremonies at his chapel since he took it over in 1999.
“Next to Valentine's day it might be one of the more popular dates,” said Harnish. “I think for couples it gives them a special way to go into the New Year, and always remember their vows.”
