Achey, Ronald 'Ron' G.
Ronald “Ron” G. Achey, 73, of 3110 Willowridge Rd., Marion, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, with his wife and family by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Celebration of Life services: 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at the funeral home, by the Rev. Dr. Karen Downey Beals. Military honors provided by American Legion Post 298, Marion. Burial will be at a later date at the Nevada Cemetery, Nevada, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo of Marion; his children, Sharon (John) Foster of Marion, Kelly McCool (Chuck Nelson) of Ames, Jodi Johnson of Cedar Rapids and Eric (Lisa) Johnston of Marion; three brothers, Richard Achey of Des Moines, David Achey of Iowa City and Billy James “BJ” Achey of Washington; five grandsons, Jason, Gary, Christopher, Austin and Ethan; a granddaughter, Lydia; and a great-granddaughter, Brielle.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ron was born Jan. 28, 1938, the son of Verl and Pearl (Smith) Achey, in Atkins, Iowa. He married Mary Jo on July 19, 1977, in Cedar Rapids. Ron worked at Goss for 32 years, retiring in 2000 as a supervisor.
He was a member of Marion American Legion Post 298 for 17 years.
A memorial fund has been established in Ron's memory.
