Hurdlers shine for Linn-Mar
Jeff Linder May. 7, 2015 10:59 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — Nick House couldn't fully describe his quantum leap in the 400-meter hurdles.
'It kind of came out of nowhere,' he said. 'I saw my time, and I couldn't believe it.'
House and Daniel Gorsich led a tremendous effort by the Linn-Mar hurdlers Thursday night at the MVC Valley Division boys' track and field meet Thursday evening at Kingston Stadium.
The big prize, though, went to Cedar Falls.
The Tigers scored in the top three in 14 events and won the final three in pulling away for the crown with 146 points. Linn-Mar was second with 126; Cedar Rapids Kennedy third with 100.
Cedar Falls' Sam Schilling and Kennedy's Dalles Jacobus shared divisional athlete-of-the-year honors. Schilling captured the 3,200- and 1,600-meter titles, and Jacobus swept the throws, including a career-best 163 feet, 10 inches in the discus.
Behind House and Gorsich, Linn-Mar owned the hurdles. They ran the first two legs of the shuttle hurdle relay, which topped the field in 57.41 seconds.
Gorsich went on to win the 110-meter highs in 15.12 seconds, then House shaved nearly 2 1/2 seconds off his best in the 400 lows, winning from Lane 1 in 54.88 seconds.
'Of course, I like Lane 4, but from the inside, you can see the competition,' House said. 'It's fun chasing people down.'
House, a sophomore, moved from 22nd in Class 4A in the 400 hurdles all the way up to No. 3.
'It's a great feeling. Maybe I can go to state and get some points for my team,' he said.
Gorsich, a junior, began hurdling in eighth grade, but stopped for a time as a freshman. Linn-Mar hurdling coach Tim Stamp convinced him to return.
'He saw that I have long legs and tried me out,' Gorsich said. 'I'm not scared to go over them.'
Linn-Mar also got wins from Perrion Scott in the 100, Dalton Gosch in the 400 and its medley relay.
Kennedy did its customary damage in the field events. In addition to Jacobus' exploits, the Cougars got a win from Willie Rhoads in the high jump.
Iowa City West's Wali Parks was the 200-meter champion, and Cedar Rapids Jefferson captured the 800 relay.
The meet was delayed 75 minutes at the beginning due to lightning.
