Jul. 25, 2015 9:59 am
Former Iowa wide receiver Damond Powell was shot last night in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, according to Toledo television station 13ABC.
According to Toledo's CBS affiliate, WTOL, Powell was shot in the face but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. He remains hospitalized, according to 13ABC.
Powell played wide receiver for Iowa the last two seasons after transferring from Snow Junior College in Utah. He caught 19 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games last year. He had 12 catches for 291 yards and two scores in 2013. He signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals this spring.
Police told 13ABC that the shooting took place around 9 p.m. Friday in the 400 blocks of Heathshire in Toledo. Powell left the scene and was driven to a Toledo-area hospital. Witnesses tell the television station they heard multiple gun shots. Police have not released the names of any suspects or made an arrest.
WTOL reports Powell and his friends were sitting in a driveway and shots were fired from a gold-colored car down the street. Shell casings were recovered nearby, with a house and vehicle also struck.
Powell is a 2011 graduate of Rogers High School in Toledo.
