HERBERT "HERB" NEIL JORDAN
Iowa City
Herbert "Herb" Neil Jordan, 91, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020, surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Life is anticipated in the Spring
of 2021, when family and friends can gather outside and plant a tree (or two) in his honor. Inurnment will be at the Oakland Cemetery columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Oaknoll Foundation or to the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation.
Herb was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Hammond, Ind., the son of the Rev. Clifford Jordan and Avanelle Kleppinger. Herb served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon returning to the United States, he received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in audiology from Syracuse University.
Herb moved to Iowa City in 1963, where he served for over 30 years as the chief of audiology and speech pathology at the V.A. Medical Center. In addition, he was an adjunct professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa. Professional connections introduced him to the love of his life, speech pathologist Linda Smith, whom he married on June 25, 1965.
Herb was a passionate outdoorsman. His favorite memories were of time spent canoeing, camping and exploring in the Boundary Waters. He was also an avid reader, crossword-puzzle-tackler, and Iowa Hawkeye supporter. In everything he did, he modeled for his children and grandchildren the value of a curious mind.
Herb was past president of the Iowa City Optimist Club, a past chairman of the Johnson County Regional Planning Commission and a member of the Oaknoll Retirement Residence Resident Council. He further achieved infamy late in life as the chair of the Oaknoll "Tree Committee."
Herb is survived by his two children, Jennifer Lee Jordan (Michael Molitor) of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Andrew Lloyd Jordan (Deborah) of Tipton, Iowa. He is also survived by the many grandchildren who brought him such great joy: Finn Cheney Jordan, Neil Lloyd Jordan, Margaret Jane Molitor, Charles Nicholas Jordan Molitor and Ivy Lynn Molitor.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Evan and Morris; his sister, Jean; and many beloved canine companions.
