THOMAS EDWARD BENNING Cedar Rapids Thomas Edward Benning, 56, of Arizona City, Ariz., passed away on Sept. 1, 2016. Tom was born on May 9, 1960, in Ohio, to George Louis and Helen Ann Benning. Tom was a passionate man, not only in the sports teams he supported, but his family. He enjoyed going to his kids' sporting events, watching and cheering them on. Tom and his family have a long legacy of watching Notre Dame games and Tom was a hardcore Steelers and Hawkeyes fan. His grandchildren meant everything to him and his heart belonged to them. He worked in retail for over 35 years, locally, working at Walgreens and Dollar General. Both his employees and customers knew the positive impact Tom gave his community. Tom met his wife, Sheryl, of 34 years, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they were both raised. He enjoyed telling everyone when she called him on his phone, "My beautiful bride is calling." When Sheryl's parents became ill, Tom spent seven years caring for them. Tom and Sheryl did enjoy traveling when possible, taking cruises in the Bahamas and Mexican Riviera to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Tom is preceded in death by his father, George Benning. Tom is survived by his wife, Sheryl; mother, Helen Ann; four children, Richelle Soto and son-in-law Felix Soto, Shannon McCabe, Kevin Benning and Amber Benning; brothers, Richard Benning, Raymond Benning and Mike Benning; sisters, Kathy Irvine, Mary Noland and Jenny Clendenin; grandchildren, Kaleb Tiegen, Jaden McCabe, Purity Brown, Aaron Soto, Angelica Soto, Alexander Soto and Alyssa Soto; and niece, Cheyenne Lanning.
