Police department important to Fayette

I support the Fayette mayor and City Council for their decision to keep a city-run police department. I applaud them for keeping an open mind and researching other options. By doing this, they have further educated themselves on how important our police department is to our community.
I also support their decision in hiring an outside group of Iowa police chiefs to assist in the hiring process of a new police chief for Fayette.
From what I know, this group of police chiefs will conduct research in our community by meeting with the mayor and council members, as well as community members, to find out what we want in a police chief. They also put the qualified applicants through a series of “tests” and interviews to determine how they perform in various scenarios. This shows the candidates' true colors and their knowledge and skills.
Then the group presents each candidate's scores to the mayor and council for them to decide which candidate they would like to hire.
By having professional, successful Iowa police chiefs, who have nothing to gain from the outcome of who is hired, yet know what it takes to be successful in such a position, assist with the hiring of a new police chief is a wise investment for Fayette.
