CRSD JANSSEN: Seek efficiencies, align resources and continuously improve

My name is Kristin Janssen, and I am running for an at-large seat on the Cedar Rapids Community School Board. I believe I bring a new voice, a fresh perspective and relevant experience to the board of education. I am seeking this opportunity to serve because as a mother of three, I am deeply invested in the quality of our schools, and in the continued success of our community through the education offered by our school system.
I am a Cedar Rapids native and have lived in the city over half my life. Since 1999, I've worked in performance management for the Veterans Administration. In that role I analyze data, advise administrators, and strive to foster constant improvements within a large system, serving a range of internal and external constituents.
The oldest of my sons is a 2015 graduate of Washington High School, and his younger brothers are also enrolled in the Cedar Rapids public school system. I have always been deeply involved in their education. Living in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, during their younger years I coached, volunteered for school activities, and served as president of their elementary school Parent Teacher Organization. Since returning to Cedar Rapids, I continue to be involved in their education and school activities, most recently serving as president of the swim team parents' group. I engage with their teachers, counselors, coaches and school administrators. I've made a point of learning our school system from the ground up, and am eager to listen, lend my voice and lead.
Our responsibility is to provide every student access to the educational opportunities that will help them in the next phase of their lives. This begins by ensuring that elementary and middle school students are ready for their next educational steps. It also means preparing older students for their lives after secondary education. Regardless of the path an individual may choose, our schools must prepare each child to be productive, engaged citizens able to pursue happiness along their own path.
I work very hard every day to seek program efficiencies, evaluate systems and align resources to improve the lives of veterans. I offer a combination of that experience, my love of our community, and my commitment to our children's education in the ongoing obligation to continuously improve our school system. I am asking for your vote Sept. 8.
