Annabel Violet (Fuchser) Ballard, 96, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015, in Sandy, Utah. Services: 3 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at 2 p.m. The Rev. Allen Biere will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Annabel was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Emerson, Neb., the daughter of Paul G. Fuchser and Anna (Steiner) Fuchser. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Emerson, Neb. She graduated from Emerson High School in 1935. She then graduated from Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Neb., with an associate's degree. She went on to receive her bachelor's degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, on June 8, 1958. Annabel's first teaching position was at Concord, Neb., in 1938, subsequently teaching at Sioux City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She retired with 29 years of service from the Cedar Rapids school system in 1985. After she retired, Annabel worked with Wycliffe Bible Translators for 18 months as a teacher. After her service in Papua, New Guinea, she served in the same capacity as a teacher in Hong Kong until July 1994.
Annabel married John A. Pearson on Aug. 20, 1939, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Emerson, Neb. They later divorced. On Aug. 22, 1957, she married Wayne F. Ballard at Berean Baptist Church in Lexington, Ky.
Survivors include a son, Richard Pearson and wife Dora of Sandy, Utah; stepdaughter, Joyce Ballard Moore of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Mary Pearson Hill of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; and stepdaughter-in-law, Bernadett Ballard of Fountain Valley, Calif. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Anna Fuchser; her husband, Wayne F. Ballard; a son, John L. Pearson; stepson, James Ballard; stepdaughter, Jane Ballard Nelson; her sisters, Martha Fuchser, Lillian Frederickson, Emma Krusemark, Leona Daum, Lydia Splittgerber, Marie Parrish and Hazel Nelson; and a brother, Paul Fuchser.
