Richard Lee Pieper, 84, of Iowa City, passed away unexpectedly at Mercy Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018. A memorial service to celebrate Dick's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City with Pastor Roger Dykstra officiating. Visitation will from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., in Iowa City.
Richard was born on Aug. 24, 1933, in Newport, Iowa, the son of Melvin and Harriet (Sherman) Pieper. He was a graduate of Wyoming High School and later went on to graduate from Davenport Barber College. Dick served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1954. On Oct. 14, 1955, he married Verna Clapp in Oxford Junction, Iowa.
In 1964, Dick and Charlie Clarahan opened Hawkeye Barber Shop in Iowa City, which he continued to own and operate for over 50 years. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman and loved to garden. He was known for the fantastic tomatoes he grew and gave away. Dick also enjoyed refinishing antique furniture and was a passionate Hawkeye fan. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife Verna of 62 years; their three children, Bryan (Kathy) Pieper, Mark (Kelly) Pieper and Renee (Jess) Lopez; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Merlin; and two uncles, Ernie and Everett Pieper.
